Hey guys,

In today’s post I’m going to show you a quick ‘n’ easy method for getting rid of fruit flies.

This technique will kill the fruit flies, so if that bothers you, I’m sorry. Personally, I don’t care too much for the life of a fruit fly!

So, how do you get rid of fruit flies?

We’re going to be building a fruit fly trap from items that are readily available in most homes. You will need:

  • A small bowl
  • Vinegar (preferably apple cider vinegar but regular malt vinegar is fine)
  • Bleach or washing-up liquid

Having got the bits you need to construct your fruit fly trap, simply follow these directions:

  1. Pour some vinegar into the bowl. It should have a depth of around 2cm.
  2. Add a little bleach or washing-up liquid to the vinegar – only a tiny squirt is needed.
  3. Leave the bowl near to your fruit fly infestation.

This ingenious trap works so well because the fruit flies are attracted to the vinegar (vinegar is basically fermented ethanol, which is the same thing that attracts the pests to rotting fruit).

The bleach breaks the surface tension of the vinegar, which causes the fruit flies to be sucked under (a bit like quicksand) when they try to land on it and subsequently drown in the liquid.

For larger infestations, I would recommend creating two or three (and sometimes even four) traps scattered around the areas of fruit fly activity.

When the vinegar/bleach solution has killed around a hundred fruit flies or the bottom of the solution is packed with fruit fly corpses, simply empty the contents into the sink. And if you still have fruit flies buzzing around, make up a new solution.

You can find alternative methods of getting rid of pesky fruit flies here, here and here.

Fruit flies get their name from their attraction to fruit – especially fermenting fruit.

If they get in your home, they can multiply quickly and create an infestation. They eat your food, buzz around your head and can carry a variety of diseases putting you at risk of infection. The most common place they inhabit is the kitchen as this room often contains a good source of food.

This article deals with methods and techniques you can use to get rid of fruit flies from your kitchen.

CLEAN UP!
Your first task in dealing with a fruit fly infestation is to remove any rotting or fermenting food sources from your kitchen.

Make sure all alcoholic beverages (and other sugary drinks) have lids on them so as not to attract the fruit flies.

Put all fruit and vegetables inside cupboards (temporarily) and give the kitchen a thorough clean.

All decaying matter should removed from your kitchen, so all shelving, worktops and the exterior of cupboards should be swept and wiped down. Under the refrigerator is also a prime location for discarded rotting food so make sure you clean under the fridge too.

Finally, flush your drains (and waste disposal unit if you have one) and empty the trash regularly before it begins to overflow.

BATTEN DOWN THE HATCHES!
Ensure fruit flies can’t get into your kitchen by sealing off all possible ways in for them.

Keep your exterior door closed as much as possible, even if it is warm outside. Ventilate your home by opening windows in other rooms of your home instead. If you have kids, explain to them that is important they close the door behind them whenever they go in or out of the house.

Repair any cracks or crevices in the walls, floor and ceiling that may provide an entrance for fruit flies.

Also, ensure that your dustbin is located away from your exterior walls as fruit flies may initially be attracted to the garbage but then find a way in through the wall to your kitchen via piping or air vents.

EXTERMINATE!
The final task is to exterminate any fruit flies that have got into your kitchen. There are a multitude of ways to do this, but perhaps the easiest is to create a home-made fruit fly trap.

To do this, take an empty 2 litre coke (or other soft drink) bottle and cut off the top of it (about 15cm / 6″). Pour some fruit fly bait into the bottom half  such as fruit juice, apple cider vinegar or even beer. Next, invert the top part so that the spout is pointing downwards and insert it into the bottom half then secure it into place. Finally leave it somewhere close to your fruit fly infestation.

The fruit flies will be able to easily pass through the spout but be unable to find their way out.

There are also a number of other traps that you can purchase to catch fruit flies including:

Hey guys,

Just a quick post to tell you about a cool website I found, which gives some great advice about getting rid of silverfish.

For those of you not familiar with silverfish, they’re those little shiny bugs that crawl around your bathroom when the lights are out.

I had a small infestation in my own bathroom recently and so I did a quick search and found out that an insecticide manufacturer called Harris do a cockroach spray that works really well against silverfish.

“The Harris brand (pictured above) manufacture some great insecticides that are not only toxic to the silverfish when consumed but also damage their exoskeleton when they come into contact with it and contain Harris’ famous lure, which makes the poison irresistible to the insects.”

I got myself a can of the stuff and the silverfish were wiped out almost immediately :)

Hey guys,

I thought I’d begin this blog with a post about what fruit flies are and why they are a pest.

They have a length of just a few millimeters, brownish in color and have large red eyes.

Fruit flies (scientific name: Drosophila melanogaster) are so-called because of their attraction to rotting (and sometimes not-rotting) fruit. In actual fact, it is the alcohol produced when fruit begins to ferment that they are really attracted to.

They also lay eggs or larvae within rotting fruit, which can hatch very quickly (within hours), which means it doesn’t take long for an infestation to take hold.

To prevent fruit fly infestation, it is important to get rid of any fruit as soon as it begins to rot. Also ensure that any alcoholic beverages are sealed shut as these will also attract them. Without a source of food, they will have no reason to inhabit your kitchen or other rooms in your house.

There are a number of methods to get rid of fruit flies, including assembling cool fruit fly traps but unfortunately I don’t have time to cover that today. Over thecoming weeks,I’ll be sharing with you loads of great methods forgetting rid of fruit flies, so stay tuned :)
